Tips for a Successful Home Renovation

The number of home renovation projects is continuing to grow in 2021 after a banner year in 2020. We’ve collectively realized the limitations of our current floor plans and exterior spaces and want the function and comfort we need in a Covid world.

Here are some dos and don’ts to help you navigate the sometimes daunting and stressful process.

1) Have a realistic budget.

Figure out what you can spend, and work backwards to make sure it will cover your scope of work. There are estimating tools online or ask an industry professional to help with this.

2) Determine if you need permits.

We highly recommend contacting your township and making sure you are following the requirements. The last thing you want is an inspector knocking at your door after seeing a contractor’s van outside. It is tempting to save money on permit fees and the inconvenience of inspections, but it is not worth the risk of having to rip out new work or a liability issue if things are not properly installed.

3) Hire a professional to help with planning.

Architects, structural engineers, and interior designers all bring different skills that might be necessary for your project. Their expertise, experience, and vision will fill knowledge gaps and ensure a smoother process for you.

4) Prepare emotionally for setbacks, delays, and problems.

Even the most efficiently run job will have variables that are out of everyone’s control. Supply chains are disrupted, items may arrive damaged, someone gets sick. It is a matter of when, not if, and being ready for it will help reduce your stress during what is an emotionally taxing endeavor.

5) Don’t allow a hammer to swing until all of your construction materials are on site.

Freight delays are getting more common, and goods are taking longer than ever before to arrive. The disruption of not having a kitchen or bathroom to use will be greatly minimized by following this rule. If you don’t have room in your garage, get a pod to store materials until you’re ready to begin demo.

Renovations are exciting and rewarding! Keep your mindset focused on the finish line and with good planning, the right people, and a realistic budget, you will have dream spaces to enjoy for years to come!
